Hoi An walking local food tour We had a great afternoon / evening on the local back street food scene. It was less than normal as far as type of food experience we are used to but so much more than hoped for in terms of local eating and general local exposure. It was just the two of us and a fellow named Hai ( Hi) and Hai only had to walk a few minutes and across the bridge from his home to us . 27 years old and born n raised right here in Hoi An. He definitely seemed to know a lot of people in The street. Within minutes of meeting us at the hotel we were out of the main drag scene and down an alley we would never choose, seated at a old Asian world locals joint , putting together our own rice paper pancakes, ice cold beer in hand and smiling. It went on like that for 4 hours! One taste course and move on. We sat on foot high little stools on street corners, walked down alleys that opened into the locals food area and even met a 105 year old man who makes legendary black sesame pudding. The pudding is reputed to have digestive benefits. Did I mention he was 105?!!!!!
He got up and came to have a chat with us but wouldn’t take a picture until he put his shirt on. He was laughing and telling me it was him in the wall paintings and pictures. The man is a local treasure and I was humbled . 105!! And still walking, talking and joking. He has lived through two wars in his own country and the government is now helping him out. I can’t recommend Hai enough. My wife Jo fired questions at him all night and so we learned a lot about the local cultures and history. When I said I was thirsty because we were walking in the heat , he was quick to ask if I wanted s cold beer and so we sat with some local neighbourhood guys pulling beers out of an ice chest! The last few stops were back towards old town which ultimately brought us back to the full on Lantern festival happening every month, it also included a fantastic iced tea stop that had people lined up 10 deep at a service window…FOR TEA! Can I just say….it was ridiculously refreshing! It contained lemon grass, honey, ginger, cinnamon and chilli. Known to be great for your liver. Winner! We will have another of those before we leave Hoi An. Then a real cool ice cream show. Jo loves the little taste adventures and tonight Hai took us on a good adventure and was good company all night. It was worth every penny. You wouldn’t dream or think to get to any of places we went today and THAT is the beauty of it.
We go to bed, two very pleased people. If you like something off the beaten path and not in a 5 star resort then do this .
